Mateja Bela University was established on July 1, 1992 by merging the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Economics.
Banska Bystrica has a rich tradition in education and culture. Already in the 13th century there was a church and town school in the town. In the 17th century, a Jesuit and later an Evangelist gymnasium was founded. In this gymnasium first studied, then worked as rector Matej Bela, in whose honor the university was named.
Currently, Matej Bela University has six faculties. The Faculty of Humanities trains specialists in English, French, German, Hungarian, Spanish and Slovak.
