The BSc (bakalár) programme of 3 years is the lowest undergraduate degree. This programme ends with the Final State Examination, after which the graduate is awarded the degree of “Bakalár (Bc.)”. Successful BSc. graduates can then apply to continue in the appropriate Mgr. programme at Comenius University or at other universities in Slovakia or abroad. The majority of students take this Mgr. (magister) programme which has a nominal span of 2 years.

PhD programmes generally last for four years and students are expected to submit a thesis within this period. In the first year, students normally devote themselves to identifying a topic and surveying as much pertinent literature as possible to prove the originality of their research. Here, they will have guidance from their academic supervisor. The second and third years are spent on the work required to prove their hypotheses and to formulate specific conclusions. Most of the final year of the Ph.D study is spent on writing up the thesis.


Pavel Josef Safarik University in Kosice (Univerzita Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v Košiciach)


This University was established in 1959. It is the second oldest University in Slovakia. By joining the subsidiary of the Medicine Faculty of Comenius University with the Philosophical Faculty accrued from the Philosophical Faculty of the Pedagogical College in Prešov, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice was established, which fastened onto the tradition of the historical Jesuitical Košice University.
